Overview
Vocabi is a language-learning app. This page explains what information we collect when you use it, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We collect the minimum we need to run the app and keep your learning progress.
Information we collect
- Account information. When you sign in — with Google, or with a Moo/liap.ca account — we receive your name, email address, and (for Google) your profile photo and a Google account identifier, so we know it's you across visits.
- Learning data. The languages you're learning, the words and phrases you gather, your practice results, and progress toward "learned" status for each word. This is the core of the app — it's how your dictionary and games stay in sync across devices.
- Content you submit. Text you paste into the Reader, and words or phrases you look up, are sent to our servers to fetch a translation or definition and, if you choose, add it to your dictionary.
- Device and performance data. The 3D world reports anonymous performance metrics (frame timing, device capability) to help us keep it running smoothly. This is not tied to your identity and is used purely for capacity planning.
- On-device storage. Some settings — your interface language, onboarding progress, items found in the 3D world — are stored only in your browser (localStorage) and are never sent to us.
How we use this information
- To run your account and keep your dictionary, decks, and progress synced.
- To generate translations and definitions when you look up a word.
- To improve the app — fixing bugs, tuning difficulty, and keeping the 3D world performant.
- To communicate with you about your account, if needed.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your learning data for advertising.
Who we share it with
- Google Sign-In — used only to verify your identity when you choose to sign in with Google.
- Our translation/definition service — the specific word or phrase you look up is sent to a third-party AI provider to generate a definition, without identifying you personally.
- PhytoEngine — the engine behind the 3D world's plants and terrain, which receives the anonymous performance data described above.
We don't share your account information or learning data with anyone else, except where required by law.
Vocabi browser extension
The Vocabi Chrome extension ("Vocabi word scraper") shows the subtitles of a video you are watching as tappable words, so you can look them up and add them to your Vocabi dictionary. It runs only on video pages of angel.com, youtube.com and netflix.com, and on app.vocabi.ca.
- Subtitles. On those sites the extension reads the subtitle track the site's own player loads for the language you are learning. The words in it are sent to our servers (api.vocabi.ca) to look up their translations. When you tap a word, the sentence it appears in is sent as well, so the meaning fits the context. If that word is new to our dictionary, the word, its translation and that sentence may be kept so the new entry can be reviewed — without anything that identifies you. The extension does not record which videos you watch or your browsing history.
- Signing in. When you open app.vocabi.ca while signed in, the extension reads your Vocabi session and the language pair you are studying from that page, checks it with our servers, and keeps it in the extension's storage on your device, so you stay signed in. It is sent only to our servers, to identify your account when you add a word.
- Words you add. A word you choose to add is saved to your Vocabi dictionary, exactly as in the app.
- Stored on your device. A cache of word lookups, where you placed the panel on each site, your language pair and your session — in the extension's local storage, never on the websites you visit.
- Bug reports. If you send a bug report from the panel, we receive what you write, any screenshot you attach, and what the panel was showing when you pressed the report button: the page address, the playback time, the subtitle line and its translation, the extension version, and your browser's name and window size. Reports go to our internal task board and are used only to fix problems.
The extension does not show ads, does not sell or share your data, and does not use it for anything but the features above. Words we cannot translate from our own dictionary go to the translation/definition service described above.
Data storage & security
Your account and learning data are stored on servers we control. We take reasonable technical measures to protect it, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.
