How a message becomes vocabulary
You chat as usual. Yap reads each message against the words you already have, so every person gets their own version of the same text.
- 1
Invite someone
Share your link or QR code. Anyone who opens it can start a chat with you, even if they don't have an account yet.
- 2
See what you can already read
A solid green underline marks a word you know. A faint dotted one marks a word you can tap. The count on each message tells you how much of it you know before you try.
- 3
Tap to earn the translation
The translation starts covered. Each word you tap uncovers its part. Tap every word you didn't know and the rest appears. Names don't need tapping, because a name isn't a word to learn.
- 4
Keep the words you want
Press + and the word goes straight into the right deck in Vocabi. The count on the message climbs right away, and the word is ready to practise.
The rest of a good chat
Your translation, your way
Earn each translation, show it whole, or turn it off. Touch and hold a message to see its full translation any time.
Text in photos
Share a photo of a menu or a street sign, and Yap can read the text in it and translate it.
Videos at full quality
Send a video without squashing it. Yap deletes its copy once everyone has saved theirs.
Write in any of your languages
Choose your languages for each chat. Messages in languages you already speak stay plain.
A wrong translation?
Report it from the word's tooltip, and say what it should be if you know.
Replies you won't miss
Turn on notifications and Yap tells you when someone writes, even when it's closed.
Yap is part of Vocabi
Your Vocabi account works in Yap, and every word you keep lands in your Vocabi deck. There, seven word games help you learn it, and each word you learn helps rebuild your own village.
- About VocabiFrom your first letter to your first 100 words, with a village that grows with you.
- The word scraperThe same tap-and-keep, on the subtitles of Netflix, YouTube and Angel. Now in testing.
- Translator and ReaderKeep words from anything you translate or read.
Say hello to someone
Yap runs in your browser. Install it to open it in its own window, on your phone or your computer. On iPhone, add it to your Home Screen to get notifications.
People you chat with can see which languages you're learning. You can turn off being found by username in Settings.
